Route 5 passes through a large and rather derelict industrial area west of Downtown.  In all of my travels across Canada, I have never seen such a powerful mural that highlights Canadian Patriotism as this does for American Patriotism.  From an outsider looking in, if there is one thing I can say about America, the sense of pride embodied in virtually everything American could not be easily duplicated.

View looking easterly at a derelict industrial building along side the highway.  The Great Lakes Region of America was once its Industrial heartland, driven largely by the ease at which goods could be imported and exported using the Saint Lawrence Seaway and its predecessors.  The heartland of America has been the most damaged from the de-industrialization that has taken place in both America and Canada during the past 40 years.

Another very patriotic industrial building along Route 5.  Erie has a large natural harbour and shipping was long a dominant industry in the city.

I was amazed just how close some of the buildings came to the side of the road.  This speaks to the age of the industry in Erie, it seems to date back to a time long before Route 5 was a five lane Road.

Stopped for a red light at Cherry Street in Erie.  Beyond Cherry Street, Route 5 leaves the industrial area for the Central Business District of the City.  While I visited at an off time on a Sunday in the Winter, I was still surprised at just how desolate the Main Street's were.  It is becoming increasingly more apparent to me why urban blight has become so common in many American Cities.
