Interstate 90 (Pennsylvania)

Western Entrance: Ohio State Line, west of West Springfield

Eastern Entrance: New York State Line, northeast of North East

Length: 46 miles

County: Erie

Routing: I-90 enters into Pennsylvania from Ohio  in the extreme northwest corner of the state near West Springfield.  Never straying more than a few miles from the Lake Erie shore, and spending its entire time within the Keystone State in Erie County, this four-lane freeway treks northeasterly, meeting I-79 near Erie.  I-90 then passes to the south of Erie, intersecting major routes into the city like US 19, PA 97 and PA 8.  I-90 meets I-86 at its Western Terminus, and then heads northeasterly into New York State near the borough of North East.

Two-lane pull-through sign for I-90 East and exit only sign for US 19/Peach St. (Exit 24), each affixed to sign truss on I-90 East in advance of the US 19 interchange.  A large volume of traffic utilizes the upcoming US 19 exit, resulting in a third eastbound lane opening up prior to the interchange for the exit.

View of I-90 East in advance of the PA 97/State St. interchange.  Given the terrain and traffic present, it is somewhat surprising that I-90 has not been widened to six lanes through here.

2 mile advance exit sign for PA 290/PA 430 (Exit 32) on I-90 East.  Note two things about this sign: (1) the PA 290/PA 430 shields are actually a green "cover-up" of what was just a PA 430 shield formerly, and (2) "Bayfront Connector" appears on a supplemental sign.  The Bayfront Connector, which was completed in 2005, provides more convenient access between I-90 and downtown Erie than previously existed.  (Find out more at the Bayfront Connector page at the Pennsylvania Highways website, by Jeff Kitsko.)

2 mile advance exit sign for PA 89 (Exit 41) on I-90 East.  Believe it or not, North East is actually the name of the town that PA 89 enters north of the interchange.  Not so surprisingly, though, it is situated in virtually the northeastern-most part of Pennsylvania's fork into Lake Erie.
