U.S. Route 24 (Ohio)

Western Entrance: Indiana State Line, 3 miles southwest of Antwerp

Northern Terminus: Michigan State Line in the northern end of Toledo

Length: 84.71 miles

Counties: Paulding, Defiance, Henry, Lucas

Routing: As of October 29, 2009, US 24 now enters into the Buckeye State from Indiana as a four-lane expressway southwest of Antwerp, with intersections at key county and township roads, and interchanges with major highways (OH 49 and US 127) through Paulding County, and into Defiance County.  US 24 is then a full-fledged freeway around the north side of Defiance, passing interchanges with OH 15/OH 18, OH 66 and OH 281 before resuming an expressway setup, heading northeasterly into Henry County.  Just outside of Napoleon, US 6 joins US 24, and the two U.S. routes bypass Napoleon to the north via freeway.  Following the split of US 6 east of Napoleon, US 24 narrows down to two lanes, and straddles the northern banks of the Maumee River heading northeasterly up to Waterville.  After Waterville, US 24 widens back out to four lanes, and runs briefly as a freeway up through its junction with I-475/US 23.  Heading into the Toledo suburb of Maumee, US 24 becomes a surface street, and, after crossing US 20, is joined by OH 25 for a duplex through northeastern Maumee, and up to where the two routes cross I-80/I-90/Ohio Turnpike, and into Toledo.  The two routes split, with US 24 following Detroit Ave. heading northeasterly through the Glass City, and crossing I-75 twice in the process.  For its last 2 miles through Toledo...and in turn, Ohio...US 24 is routed along Telegraph Rd., heading due north.  0.5 mile north of OH 184, US 24 departs the Buckeye State, and enters into Michigan.

View of US 24 West looking into Indiana at the State Line Rd. overpass.  The actual border between Ohio and Indiana (and corresponding change of pavement) is located immediately before the end of the protuding abutments of this side of the bridge.  As a result, this overpass is built to INDOT standards.  Unlike Ohio's new overpasses along the Fort-to-Port Highway, some of which are featured on this page, Indiana's two-span concrete I-beam overpasses are of a more typical design.

View from US 24 West of the two-span bridge that carries Township Rd. 43 over the US 24 expressway just east of the OH 49 interchange.  This, along with all of the new overpasses along the Fort-to-Port Highway in Ohio, feature a strong aesthetic appeal.  They are each concrete I-beam bridges with a dark blue "wave" pattern at the bottom of the beams, and a border denoting the top of the wave.  Also note the "brick" patterns used for both the center pier and each of the abutments.  Throughout this page, this type of overpass will often be referenced as a "Fort-to-Port" style bridge.

So if reading this sign correctly, it appears that a new route was created with the opening of the new US 24 expressway?  Actually, not really...it's a patented ODOT sign goof.  This 1 mile advance exit sign for the US 127 interchange (Exit 13) shows an OH 127 shield instead.

I US 24 intersects OH 64 in downtown Waterville. OH 64 runs northwesterly to Whitehouse and Swanton, and southeasterly to Haskins and Bowling Green.  Click here for OH 64 images.

I In the southwestern Toledo suburb of Maumee, US 24 intersects the I-475/US 23 duplex.  These two highways combine to form the western bypass of the Toledo area.

View of US 24 looking southerly from Michigan into Ohio.  As the Michigan-Ohio State Line doubles as the city limits of Toledo, in lieu of a "Welcome to Ohio" sign at the state line, motorists instead pass by a "Welcome to Toledo" sign.  Just 0.5 mile ahead, US 24 intersects OH 184.
