United States Highway 20A - New York |
![]() |
Western Terminus:
Junction US-20 in Hamburg. Eastern Terminus: Junction US-20/NY-5 in Bloomfield. Length: 83.59 miles Counties: Erie, Wyoming, Livingston, Ontario Routing: US-20A is by definition an Alternate Route to US Highway 20. US-20A by-passes US 20 through the western part of New York State on a Southern alignment. In general, the highway runs almost perfectly east-west, only ducking to the northeast to reconnect with US-20 and Route 5 west of Canandaigua. Once again, speaking in general, US-20A is by in large a fast route. Aside from Orchard Park, and East Aurora where the highway is south of Buffalo, the only major community that US-20A passes through is Warsaw. Trucks and other heavy vehicles are prohibited from entering Warsaw from the east due the highway's very steep and winding approach to the little community. Links:

This view looks easterly into the Tonawanda Creek Valley near Varysburg. US-20A passes through some spectacular valley's as it traverses the countryside southeast of Buffalo. No other east-west corridor running parallel to US-20A passes through deep cavernous valleys as this road does. the New York State Thruway, running only 15 miles north of US-20A is almost pancake flat between Buffalo and Rochester. |

Another easterly view, this time looking towards the overhead signage warning vehicles over 9 tones to enter the roadside pull-out. The road into Warsaw from the west is best described as less than ideal. The road to Warsaw for westbound vehicles is atrocious. Eastbound heavy vehicles are merely advised of the conditions heading into Warsaw. Westbound heavy trucks are actually forbidden from traversing the road -- keep in mind this is a US highway. |

Large roadside sign advising travelers of the challenges awaiting them on approach to Warsaw. Despite the signage, I have found the eastbound approach to Warsaw to be a fairly straight forward drive. I can however, appreciate the westbound signage that is complimentary to this sign. |

Wyoming County Town of Warsaw |
This view looks westerly as US-20A begins its decent west into Warsaw. Heavy trucks and busses are forbidden from entering Warsaw via US-20A in both directions due to two very steep valley accesses. US-20A has more large hills than any other neighbouring east-west route. US-20 is quite tame compared to US-20A. |
