Lake Ontario State Parkway

Western Terminus: Lakeside Beach Dr., a connector to NY 18, at a partial interchange at the entrance to Lakeside Beach State Park

Eastern Terminus: At the intersection of Lake Ave. & Pattonwood Dr. in Rochester

Length: 35.05 miles

Counties: Orleans, Monroe

Routing: The Lake Ontario State Pkwy. runs from Lakeside Beach Park, roughly 35 miles west of Rochester to the Lake St. intersection in Rochester.  East of Lake St., the roadway continues across the Col. Patrick O'Rorke Bridge and into Irondequoit as Pattonwood Dr.  Because of the proximity of the western suburbs of Rochester the eastern portion of the Parkway, it is used extensively by commuters traveling to and from the city.  The western segment of the Parkway is lightly traveled, and is one of the more scenic stretches of roadway.  Like other New York State Parkways, commercial traffic is restricted from traveling on the Lake Ontario State Pkwy.

Two views of EB Lake Ontario State Pkwy. at the diamond interchange where it meets NY 272, in the vicinity of mile marker 12.  The first photo shows the overall scene as the Parkway arrives at the interchange.  Traffic volumes were extremely light along the western parts of the Lake Ontario State Parkway when these early spring photos were taken.  The second photo shows a close-up of the button-copy exit sign for NY 272.  Scott notes having a certain affinity for these types of signs, in that, given that his home province of Ontario has never used button-copy signage such as this.  The high-resolution image of the second photo is a close-up of the sign that shows the intricate glass beads in great detail.

View looking along WB Lake Ontario State Pkwy. through the aesthetically-pleasing NY 261 overpass.  Between the Hamlin Beach State Park and NY 261 interchanges, the Lake Ontario State Parkway, while maintaining a four-lane divided cross-section, meets all cross roads at-grade.

View looking along EB Lake Ontario State Pkwy. through the elegant East Manitou Rd. overpass.  Notice the central pier extends further out then the arched spans, almost creating a pedestrian look-out from atop the overpass.

View looking westerly along the Lake Ontario State Parkway from the East Manitou Rd. overpass.  Notice the narrow median between the two carriageways in this photo.  This would be undesirable on a freeway; however, the 55 m.p.h. limit, coupled with heavy truck restrictions imposed on all New York State Parkways, reduce the need for a central barrier.
