Interstate 81 (New York)

Southern Entrance: Pennsylvania State Line, southeast of Binghamton

Northern Terminus: Canadian Border at the 1,000 Islands Bridges at Wellesley Island.  I-81 continues into Ontario as Highway 137.

Length: 183.52 miles

Counties: Broome, Cortland, Onondaga, Oswego, Jefferson

Routing: I-81 crosses from Pennsylvania into the Empire State southeast of Binghamton.  The Interstate meets NY 17 (future I-86) east of the city, and the two routes duplex into Binghamton.  I-81 splits off there and, turning north, soon passes the Western Terminus of I-88.  I-81 then generally trends northwesterly to Cortland, then northerly toward the greater Syracuse area.  I-81 meets I-481, the eastern by-pass of Syracuse, south of the city, I-690 in downtown Syracuse, I-90/New York Thruway north of there, and I-481 again in the northern suburbs.  I-81 goes north from the Syracuse area, running parallel to the eastern shore of Lake Ontario from approximately Pulaski northward.  Bending ever so slightly to the northeast, I-81 then passes to the west of Watertown, making its way up past the NY 12 junction, and ultimately coming to an end at the Ontario border amidst the 1,000 Islands Bridge, which actually refers to a series of bridges which cross the St. Lawrence River.  I-81 itself crosses one of these bridges just north of NY 12, and at 2 lanes wide, is one of only two remaining stretches of 2-lane Interstate remaining.  (The other is I-93 through Franconia Notch National Park in New Hampshire.)  At the border, I-81 turns into Ontario's Highway 137, a brief highway that connects I-81 with one of Ontario's busiest routes, Highway 401.

Sign truss on I-81 South/NY 17 East with diagrammatical sign for the upcoming split of the two major highways in 0.25 mile.  Of the three southbound lanes here, the left lane is default for NY 17 East, while the right lane is maintained for I-81 South.  Traffic in the center lane may follow either NY 17 or I-81.

Overhead signage facing I-81 North/NY 17 West on sign truss spanning the entire width of I-81/NY 17 at the Broad St. interchange (Exit 3).  Lane distribution signage is provided at this point for the upcoming I-81/NY 17 split.  Note that the leftmost sign, for NY 17 West, also features "West" text with a blank space beneath it.  In the future, an I-86 shield will be added to that sign.  Once the final at-grade stretches of NY 17 expressway near Elmira are upgraded to freeway, the I-86 designation will be extended eastward from Elmira to I-81, and on to NY 17's interchange with NY 79 at Windsor.

NY 17 West and  I-81 North (to I-88) lane distribution signs, along with exit signs for NY 7 South (Exit 4 N) and NY 7 North (Exit 4 S), all affixed to sign truss facing I-81 North/NY 17 West at the NY 7 cloverleaf interchange.  The rightmost lane of an otherwise six-lane freeway serves as a collector/distributor lane for the interchange.

Overhead diagrammatical sign for the western split of the I-81/NY 17 duplex in Binghamton, affixed to sign gantry spanning the entire cross-section of the freeway, and located approximately 0.25 mile before the split.  Note that a distance is not shown on the diagrammatical sign showing said distance to the interchange.  This is a common practice on diagrammatical signs in New York's neighbor to the north, Ontario, as well.

Sign gantry at the western split of the I-81/NY 17 duplex, which is situated above the Chenango River.  As is the case with the eastern split of the duplex, there are three lanes going into this split, with the left lane for NY 17 West traffic, the right lane for I-81 North traffic, and the center lane available for motorists going in either direction.  Note the NY 17 shield on the left guide sign has a black background, which is unusual for shields on guide signs in the Empire State.

Heading west from I-81, NY 17 makes its way through New York's Southern Tier, traveling to Elmira, Corning and points west.  NY 17 is also co-signed as I-86 from Elmira westward.

Sign truss featuring four green lane distribution signs on EB 7th N. St. for upcoming intersections with I-81 and US 11.  The next traffic signal is for the on- and off-ramps to and from I-81 South.  Dual left turn lanes allow for movement on to the loop ramp to I-81 South, while the right two lanes are for through traffic, and allow for connections to I-81 North beyond the overpass, and to US 11 after the interchange.  Because 7th N. St. meets I-81 just one interchange south of I-90/New York Thruway, I-90 is noted on the sign for I-81 North.
