The section of US 31 between Manistee and Traverse City has frequent passing lanes. Michigan utilizes an exceptionally long taper area beyond the end of its lane pavement markings, as seen in this photo taken east of Honor.  Thus, neither lane can really be considered as a "through lane". In neighboring Ontario, the right-hand "through" lane actually ends and the passing lane continues on, forcing all through traffic to merge left.

Facing west along the US 31/M-72 multiplex from the pedestrian bridge at Traverse City State Park.  The pedestrian bridge links the main campground area with the beach area.  Between Traverse City and Acme, US 31/M-72 maintains a four- to five-lane cross-section.  By the state park, US 31/M-72 is five lanes, including a center turn lane.
