U.S. Route 23 (Michigan)

Southern Entrance: Ohio State Line near Temperance

Northern Terminus: I-75 (Exit 338), at a partial interchange in Mackinaw City

Length: 364.07 miles

Counties: Monroe, Washtenaw, Livingston, Genesee, Saginaw, Bay, Arenac, Iosco, Alcona, Alpena, Presque Isle, Cheboygan, Emmet

Routing: US 23 enters into Michigan from the Toledo, Ohio area near Temperance.  As a four-lane freeway, US 23 proceeds northerly past Dundee and Milan, and then around the east and north sides of Ann Arbor, including a 3-mile duplex with M-14.  North of Ann Arbor, US 23 passes to the east of Brighton, where it meets I-96.  Further along, US 23 passes to the west of Fenton, before merging in with I-75 near Flint.  US 23 follows the Interstate for 74 miles, passing around Flint, Saginaw and Bay City in the process.  Near Standish, US 23 splits off from I-75, heading east for 3 miles along a short four-lane freeway to an interchange with M-13.  From this point to the northeast, the generally two-lane US 23 serves Michigan's "Sunrise Side", following the Lake Huron shore as it serves communities like Standish, Tawas City and Oscoda.  The U.S. highway starts to trend more northerly as it makes its way up to Alpena.  Turning more to the northwest, US 23's coastal journey leads it around Rogers City, then through Cheboygan, and up into Mackinaw City, where it ends at I-75 less than 1 mile south of the Mackinac Bridge.
