U.S. Route 131 (Michigan)

Southern Entrance: Indiana State Line, south of White Pigeon

Northern Terminus: US 31 in Petoskey

Length: 268.13 miles

Counties: St. Joseph, Kalamazoo, Allegan, Kent, Montcalm, Mecosta, Osceola, Wexford, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet

Routing: US 131 traverses the west-central portion of the Lower Peninsula.  Entering into the Wolverine State south of White Pigeon, US 131 becomes a freeway south of Kalamazoo.  From there, US 131 continues north as a freeway as it goes by Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Big Rapids and Cadillac.  US 131 turns back into a two-lane highway for the remainder of its trek, going through Kalkaska and Mancelona before coming to an end at US 31 in Petoskey.

Bridge-mounted Clearview 0.75 mile advance exit sign for 68th St. and M-6 (Exits 76 and 77) on US 131 North, affixed to the 76th St. overpass.  US 131 transitions from four lanes with a grassy median to six lanes (eight briefly between 76th St. and 68th St.) with a paved median and concrete tall-wall at this location.

Overhead Clearview exit only sign for 76th St. (Exit 75) on US 131 South.  A fourth southbound lane that forms with the merging of the C/D lane for M-6 and 68th St. turns into an exit only lane for 76th St.  Note the ending of the left lane that takes place simultaneously, as US 131 approaches the 76th St. overpass.

View looking south along US 131 from the 68th St. overpass at Exit 76.  The southbound C/D lane from the M-6 interchange continues up to the spot where the entrance ramp from 68th St. merges in with the C/D lane.  At that point, the concrete barrier between the mainline and C/D lanes ends, and the C/D lane blends back in with the three mainline US 131 South lanes to form a fourth lane for the 76th St. exit.

Sign truss spanning both the mainline and C/D lanes for US 131 South at the M-6 interchange.  Over the mainline lanes is a Clearview 0.5 mile advance exit sign for 68th St. (Exit 76), and over the C/D road are exit signs for M-6 East and M-6 West.  No sooner then the C/D lanes separate from the mainline lanes, the exit ramp to M-6 West diverges from the C/D road.

Bridge-mounted 0.5 mile advance exit sign for the Cadillac BUS US 131 (Exit 177) on US 131 North/M-55 East, affixed to the Mackinac Tr. overpass.  Prior to the construction of the Cadillac By-Pass in the early 2000s, the US 131 freeway ended just north of this overpass, with the freeway melding into the roadway that is now BUS US 131.

First reassurance marker for US 131 in the southbound direction, located after the US 31 intersection.  Note the placement of the "South" tab beneath the US 131 shield, as opposed to above the shield.  The practice of putting the directional tab below a shield is common in neighboring Ontario, and throughout Canada, but here and throughout the United States it is more common to put the tab above the shield, instead of below it.
