Routing: Designated in 1998 along the former Marquette Co. Rd. 553, M-553 begins at M-35 approximately 2 miles east of Gwinn.  M-553 heads in a northerly direction, passing by M-94's Western Terminus on its way into Marquette, where it follows McClellan Ave. up to a signalized intersection with the four-lane divided US 41/M-28.  M-553 comes to an end as it arrives at the US 41/M-28 junction.

Shield assembly featuring M-553 ENDS, M-28 West and US 41 North shields at the Northern Terminus of M-553.  To access US 41 North/M-28 West from M-553 North, a Michigan Left is required.  While the directional tabs above the M-28 and US 41 shields here are correct, they are actually pointing to US 41 South/M-28 East, which are not noted.  Therefore, there should not be directional tabs above the M-28 and US 41 shields on this assembly.
