Michigan Route 201

Southern Terminus: M-22 in the southern end of Northport

Northern Terminus: Co. Rd. 640 at the northern village limits of Northport

Length: 1.47 miles

Counties: Leelanau

Routing: M-201 is a spur route that, while traversing a number of streets through Northport, serves to guide motorists from M-22, through the town and up toward Leelanau State Park, at the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula.  However, M-201 has never extended beyond the northern village limits of Northport throughout its history.  Travelers must continue onto Co. Rd. 640 and Co. Rd. 629 to get to the state park.

JCT M-22 shield in advance of M-201's Southern Terminus.  At the upcoming intersection, M-22 is signed as South in both directions!  That intersection marks the change of direction for M-22.  Straight ahead, M-22 goes to Traverse City.  To the right, M-22 follows the western side of the Leelanau Peninsula toward Frankfort.

Left-side shield assembly featuring an M-201 South shield and a TO M-22 trailblazer on M-201 South as it turns from WB Nagonaba St. to SB Waukazoo St.  Most of the turns M-201 takes through Northport feature just an M-201 shield.  In this case, there is also a TO M-22 trailblazer.

M-201 ENDS shield with attached Co. Rd. 640 marker at the Northern Terminus of M-201 at the village limits of Northport.  Note the clear delineation of the transition of the roadway from state trunk line to county road, as Leelanau County had just repaved this portion of Co. Rd. 640 prior to the time this picture was taken.
