side of this photo. Days after this photo was taken, the speed limit
along I-696 was raised from 65 to 70mph. Michigan's minimum freeway
speed was also raised, from 45 to 55mph.

I-696. Note the diamond ground concrete pavement. Diamond
grinding a road surface smoothes out service imperfections and can really
improve the ride quality of an otherwise aging pavement.

Driving westerly along I-696 under the Bermuda
underpass and nearing the Woodward Avenue interchange. Woodward Avenue
leads northwesterly from Downtown Detroit and is the former routing of US-10
before the freeway age in Metro Detroit.

several miles. US-24 crosses I-696 and M-10 about halfway through this
parallel routing, making for a very large and complex interchange.
