Advanced signage for the upcoming interchange with the M-39 freeway (Exit 183).  Unlike Ontario, to the best of the webmaster's knowledge, no U.S. state uses a different overhead sign color to differentiate local lane signage from that of the express lanes.

M-39, the Southfield Freeway, traverses north-south through the west side of Detroit, connecting Allen Park and Dearborn with Southfield.

Just east of the flyover ramps to and from M-39 there is a transfer to the express lanes from the local lanes.  Note the extent of the elevated ramps from M-39: A considerable swath of the City of Detroit was destroyed for this interchange in the 1970s.

Pedestrian bridge-mounted Clearview two-lane pull through sign for I-96 West and two-lane exit only sign for M-39 (Exit 183), affixed to the Mansfield Ave. pedestrian overpass over the I-96 West local lanes.  Unlike the eastbound approach, M-39 is accessible from both the westbound express and local lanes of I-96.

I-96 carves a considerable swath through the City of Detroit.  Unlike Toronto's twelve-lane Highway 401, this highway was constructed through pre-existing neighborhoods and communities -- the ease at which one can travel by car through Metro Detroit has undoubtedly led to some of the urban blight and poverty that has fallen upon the city.  In 2004, the City of Detroit was ranked the fourth-poorest city in the U.S.
