Emergency I-94 East and West shields on SB Francisco Rd. at its junction with Michigan Ave., south of I-94's Exit 153 east of Grass Lake.  The Emergency I-94 designation follows both state- and locally-maintained roadways that parallel I-94 from the Indiana State Line to Exit 157 near Chelsea, providing a clear alternate route for I-94 traffic to follow when the Interstate is closed.  I-94 shields with the black-on-orange Emergency plates appear along these roadways, along with roads connecting the main Interstate with the signed Emergency route.

View of the single-span overpass that carries the Norfolk Southern Railway over the westbound lanes of I-94 between Exits 157 and 156.  This bridge pre-dates the construction of the freeway through here.  At one time, a two-lane alignment of US 12 passed beneath the railroad tracks through this very bridge.  The eastbound lanes to the south were built over the railroad tracks via a three-span steel girder bridge that was a commonplace style for road bridges in Michigan circa 1960, when this stretch of I-94 was constructed.
