A History of Manitoba Highways
In 1925, the Province of Manitoba developed a provincial trunk highway system, becoming the last province in Canada to do so. Since that time, it has undergone many changes, not just with the of construction of new highways, but with the renumbering of existing highways. The provincial road system came into effect in 1966, adding over 7,000 miles of highway under provincial responsibility. That same year saw metropolitan Winnipeg implement the Metro Route system inside the newly constructed Perimeter Highway and all but eliminated the presence of provincial highways in the capital city. Within three years, many of those routes were renumbered and remain in place today.
