Interstate 93

Southern Terminus: The I-95 interchange in Norfolk County, south of Boston.

Northern Entrance: New Hampshire State Line.

Length: 46.19 Miles

Counties: Norfolk, Suffolk, Middlesex, Essex

Routing: Interstate 93 is the principal north-south interchange through Greater Boston.  I-93 begins as a through route at the I-95 trumpet interchange.  At this interchange US-1 runs concurrent with the freeway.  Just a few miles east of the I-95 interchange, I-93 intersects with MA-3 at a large three-way directional interchange.  I-93 runs northerly from the MA-3 interchange concurrent with both US-1 and MA-3 as the Southeast Expressway.  The Southeast Expressway intersects with with the MassPike (I-90) at a cumbersome interchange just south of Downtown before heading underground in a slew of tunnels constructed as part of the Big Dig.  Once above ground again I-93 once again has a large and complex interchange -- this time both MA-3 and US-1 depart west and east of the freeway respectively.  Beyond Downtown, I-93 continues northerly through the many northern suburbs of Boston (it seems as though most of Eastern Massachusetts is a suburb of Boston), intersection both I-95 and I-495 along the way.  Just past I-495 at Lawrence, I-93 enters into New Hampshire.

Northerly view from the Melnea Cass Boulevard overpass overtop of Interstate 93 looking into Boston.  Boston is the largest and most dominant centre in New England.  The City has escaped many of the negative effects of suburbanization that other large US cities have had.

Northerly view from Causeway Street across the Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge and I-93.  The Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge was constructed in 2003 and is reportedly the widest cable stayed bridge in the world.  Steve Anderson has compiled an in-depth history of the Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge and as well as the Central Artery in Boston.

View looking northerly towards the Commerce Way interchange.  I don't know how new the Commerce Way interchange is, but it obviously was constructed after the mainline of I-93.  Its a little bit ironic that I-93 would meet as many freeways as it does at tight cloverleaf interchanges yet the interchange for Commerce Way is a three-level semi-directional 'T'.

Advanced signage for Dascomb Road interchange.  This sign is situated just north of where I-93 narrows to a six-lane cross-section.  In an attempt to combat traffic congestion, motorists are permitted to drive within the outside shoulder during peak afternoon periods Monday to Friday.  Notice the extra wide 'Emergency Pullout' located behind the sign gantry.

Advanced signage for both the Route 133 and I-95 interchanges.  Interestingly, Route 128 is not shown running concurrent with I-495 on this signage.  Route 128 shares its southern terminus with I-495 at the I-93 interchange, continuing concurrent with I-495 past I-95 before terminating at Route 127 in Gloucester.

Advanced signage marking the end of Autoroute 5, amid the approaching Gatineau Hills.  What I found striking about this photo (and the view when I took the photo) was that a driver can't see the freeway exiting the valley ahead.  The Gatineau Hills are a stark contrast to the near pancake flat plains of the Lower Ottawa Valley in Ontario.

Overhead guide signage for the I-495 interchange.  Like at I-95, I-93 intersects I-495 at a large cloverleaf interchange.  North of I-495, I-93 has four interchanges with minor roads and highways that lead into Lawrence before entering New Hampshire.  I-93 is the principal North-South interstate through the State of New Hampshire, terminating at I-91 near the Vermont Border in the far north of the state.
