Interstate 90

Western Terminus: The New York State border, located southeast of Albany, NY.

Eastern Terminus: Route 1A at Logan Airport, at the east end of the Ted Williams Tunnel.

Length: 138.1 Miles

Counties: Berkshire, Hampden, Worchester, Middlesex, Suffolk, Norfolk

Routing: Interstate 90 is the principal east-west interstate highway through Massachusetts.  I-90 is tolled throughout the state, as the Massachusetts Turnpike (Mass-Pike).  The Mass-Pike was constructed on an alignment that roughly parallels US Route 20.

The freeway starts its trek through the state at the New York Boundary, located southeast of Albany, NY.  The highway progresses Southeast through the Berkshire's towards Springfield.  I-90 passes to the north of Springfield, crossing I-91.  Past Springfield, the Mass-Pike interchanges with Interstate 84.  I-84 is the principal route into Hartford, and serves as an alternate to I-95 for Boston to New York traffic -- as such, traffic volumes along the Mass-Pike increase notably east of this interchange.  Continuing east, the Pike passes through more and more suburban settings, interchanging with I-495, and the Yankee Division Highway before entering Boston.  Since 2003, I-90 has continued east of Boston's I-93 interchange, underneath of Boston Harbour 3 Route 1A and Logan International Airport, in East Boston.  I-90 ends its trek across the United States in Boston.

1 mile advanced sign for Exit 17.  Notice that despite being very much within an urban area, MassDot has elected to sign only the destinations, and not the proper city street names.  This is not atypical on tollways within the U.S., but seems inappropriate to me in this urban setting.

Easterly view along I-90 approaching the I-93 interchange.  In part due to the close proximity of Downtown Boston, and the Worcester/Framingham Commuter Rail line converging on the South Station, the I-90/93 interchange is a very complex interchange,

View looking westerly from the Harrison Avenue overpass.  I-90 shares its corridor with the Worcester/Framingham Commuter Rail line as well as Amtrak's Acela high speed rail line.

Easterly view from the Harrison Avenue overpass towards the I-93 interchange  before Boston's big dig, I-90 ended at this interchange.  It now continues east from I-93 through a series of tunnels under South Boston, and Boston Harbour meeting Route 1A at Logan Airport.  This significantly eased access between Boston and Logan Airport, reducing congestion on the twin Summer and Callahan Tunnels.

Eastern ends sign for I-90 as it transitions to Route 1A just past Boston's Logan Airport.  I have a feeling this is one of the most photographed signs along I-90.
