Above - Sign on U.S. Route 6 leaving Bishop indicating the distance to Provincetown, Massachusetts. The highway passes through no fewer than 14 states along its 3,205 mile (5,160 km) journey across the United States. At one time, U.S. Route 6 was even longer. Since the highway continued south from Bishop to Long Beach up until the 1960s, the highway actually stretched all the way from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean up until that time.
