Right - Night view of a reflectorized "button copy" freeway guide sign for U.S. Route 101 at Broadway in Burlingame. The bottom sign for Bayshore Highway and Airport Boulevard is interesting, because it has white reflective letters painted onto a non-reflective sign background. Several smaller ground-mounted signs in California are designed this way.

Left - Exit sign for I-380 on the northbound Bayshore Freeway for U.S. Route 101. The diminutive I-380 is scarcely 2 miles long, running from I-280 to U.S. Route 101 and San Francisco Airport. Although short, this freeway forms an important link in the San Francisco Bay Area's freeway network. It is also known as the Kopp Freeway.

Centre - Facing north at the U.S. Route 101 and I-80 Interchange in Downtown San Francisco. At this interchange, U.S. Route 101 exits the freeway at left and heads north along the Central Freeway towards the Golden Gate Bridge. I-80 begins at this point and heads east towards the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

Centre - Underneath the elevated Central Freeway (U.S. Route 101) in San Francisco. This short elevated freeway connects Downtown San Francisco with the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (I-80) and the Bayshore Freeway (U.S. Route 101 South).

Right - The elevated Central Freeway was built in the 1950s, in an effort to improve access to the Golden Gate Bridge. However, the freeway was only built as far north as Turk Street. Since it only went part way through the city, the elevated highway was not particularly useful in terms of moving through traffic to the Golden Gate Bridge. As a result, the section of the elevated highway north of Market Street was eventually closed and demolished. The elevated structure now terminates at Octavia Street.

Right - Facing west along Lombard Street towards Van Ness Avenue from Larkin Street. Once U.S. Route 101 exits from the elevated Central Freeway, the highway follows Van Ness Avenue north through Downtown San Francisco. At Lombard Street, U.S. Route 101 turns west and continues on Lombard Street through to Richardson Avenue, which is located near the hills in the background of this photo. At Richardson Avenue, U.S. Route 101 crosses the Marina Viaduct which leads to the Golden Gate Bridge. As seen in this photo, Lombard Street encounters severe grades east of Van Ness Avenue, so it is little wonder that the highway turns south at Van Ness Avenue rather than continue east into Downtown San Francisco.

U.S. Route 101 continues north towards Sausalito via the Golden Gate Bridge.
