Right - The Rice Avenue Overpass is probably the busiest two-lane highway overpass in the Oxnard area. Rice Avenue is heavily used by motorists as a bypass road around the eastern side of Oxnard. Rice Avenue provides a convenient cut-off route between the Ventura Freeway (U.S. Route 101) and the Pacific Coast Highway (Hwy 1), which goes right through Oxnard on its route towards Los Angeles.

Right - Ramps from Rice Avenue to U.S. Route 101 on the eastern side of the highway. This interchange is a four-ramp A-B Parclo, with a service road intersecting with the ramp terminal on the eastern side of the highway.

Centre - Close-up of the short directional ramps at Rice Avenue and U.S. Route 101. The service road intersects the bi-directional ramp roadway only a few yards east of the freeway. An unusually broad lane width was provided on the ramps at this interchange to allow trucks to complete the 90-degree turn safely.

Right - The interchange at U.S. Route 101 and Rice Avenue is essentially just a large paved area with lines painted onto the roadway to indicate the ramp lanes. Some curbs have been installed to enforce prohibited turns. Reflective delineator stakes were placed to guide motorists at night at this semi-illuminated suburban interchange.

Left - All southbound service road traffic must turn right and enter the Ventura Freeway at Rice Avenue. No other turns are permitted from the service road because of the high traffic volumes using these ramps.

Right - Ramps at the Rice Avenue and Ventura Freeway Interchange. Note the warning sign which says "Watch for ramp traffic". This busy, complicated interchange is one of the oldest junctions along U.S. Route 101 in the Ventura-Oxnard area. It will probably need to be rebuilt at some point because of the high volumes of traffic which now use this outdated, yet interesting interchange.
