U.S. Route 101 Redwood Highway Photographs (Golden Gate Bridge to Santa Rosa)
Left - Facing south along U.S. Route 101 through the Waldo Tunnel near Sausalito. The southbound tunnel was completed in 1937. This four-lane tunnel originally carried all U.S. Route 101 traffic between Mill Valley and the Golden Gate Bridge. In 1954, a second four-lane tunnel was completed immediately beside the existing 1937 tunnel. The new 1954 tunnel was designed to carry four northbound lanes of U.S. Route 101, so the existing 1937 tunnel was converted to carry southbound traffic only.
