California Interstate 15 Corona Freeway Photographs (Temecula to Corona)

Left - Facing south along Interstate 15 from the Riverside-San Diego County Boundary near Temecula. From this point northerly to Lake Elsinore,
Interstate 15 is known as the Temecula Valley Freeway. South of the Riverside-San Diego County Boundary, Interstate 15 is known as the Escondido Freeway.

Left - Hwy 74 Underpass at Interstate 15 in Lake Elsinore. Note the rather extreme steps that CalTrans often takes to protect its freeway guide
signs from would-be graffiti artists. The overhead sign is barricaded off from the overpass by a chain-link fence and the sign itself is surrounded by
razor wire.

Centre - Approaching the Hwy 74 Interchange on southbound Interstate 15 at Lake Elsinore. The freeway's name changes from the Temecula Valley
Freeway to the Corona Freeway in Lake Elsinore. The Corona Freeway designation continues north to the Riverside Freeway (Hwy 91) Interchange in Corona,
after which Interstate 15 is called the Ontario Freeway.

Left - The Corona Freeway (Interstate 15) was originally constructed with a wide grass median. However, temporary concrete barriers have recently
been installed beside the freeway in order to prevent median crossover collisions.

Right - Approaching the Temescal Canyon Road Interchange on southbound Interstate 15. This road was the original route of Hwy 71 between Corona and
Temecula before this section of Interstate 15 was built in the early 1980s.

Centre - Close-up of the reflectorized "button-copy" guide sign for Interstate 15 North to Barstow. This sign has a non-reflectorized Interstate 15
shield on it. California appears to have experimented with these partially-reflectorized signs in the 1990s, before switching to new signs with full
reflective sheeting a few years ago.

Right - Facing west along the Riverside Freeway (Hwy 91) towards the Interstate 15 Interchange. This enormous four-level semi-directional stack
interchange was completed in 1989, as part of a much larger project to connect the previously discontinuous north and south legs of Interstate 15
through Corona and Ontario. Until Interstate 15 was completed in the early 1990s, traffic had to use a temporary route of Interstate 15 along adjacent
Hamner Avenue (Hwy 31).

Centre - Pull-through overhead freeway guide sign on the westbound Riverside Freeway (Hwy 91) approaching the Corona Freeway (Interstate 15)
Interchange. The coastal cities that form the western portion of the Los Angeles metro area are referred to collectively as the "Beach Cities" on this
sign. It is interesting to note that the Hwy 91 Freeway actually stops several miles before reaching the coast, even though this sign may suggest
otherwise.

Left - Overhead signs approaching the Interstate 15 Interchange on the westbound Riverside Freeway (Hwy 91). From here, the Riverside Freeway
passes through the Santa Ana Mountains on its way through towards the coast. Interstate 15 stays on the eastern side of the Santa Ana Mountains.

Centre - Heading eastbound on the Riverside Freeway (Hwy 91) at the Corona Freeway (Interstate 15) Interchange in Corona. The only loop ramp at this
interchange connects southbound Interstate 15 to eastbound Hwy 91. This loop ramp can be seen joining the Riverside Freeway at right.

Right - The Riverside Freeway (Hwy 91) passes below Interstate 15 at the Corona Interchange. This particular interchange is one of the most
impressive stack interchanges in the Los Angeles area, because all of the ramp connections are above-grade on flyovers. Many of the directional stack
interchanges built on Los Angeles freeways have tunnels below the interchange, hidden from view.

Right - The Riverside Freeway (Hwy 91) is very heavily traveled and is one of the more congested corridors in the Los Angeles area. There is one
High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) carpool lane in each direction along most sections of Hwy 91 within Riverside County, including this section of Hwy 91 at
Interstate 15.
