Right - A sharp reverse curve on the Angeles Crest Highway (Hwy 2). This spectacular route climbs very quickly out of the suburban Los Angeles basin between Glendale and Pasadena, and rapidly ascends into the San Gabriel Mountains.

Left - Slide Canyon Bridge on Hwy 2 north of Glendale. This open spandrel concrete arch bridge was built in the 1930s and features a significant curve superelevation across the bridge deck. The northern side of the bridge is about 3 feet higher than the southern side.

Left - Hwy 2 continues its rapid ascent up towards Red Box Gap, situated between Mount Lawlor (left) and San Gabriel Peak (right). The highway makes use of several hairpin turns within canyons and ravines to overcome the steep grades encountered over the next few miles.

Right - Guide sign on Hwy 2 at Red Box Gap. Within only 20 miles of Glendale, the highway has climbed to an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet above sea level.

Right - Due to space limitations, many sections of Hwy 2 through the San Gabriel Mountains do not have any shoulders. However, turnouts are provided at regular intervals to provide places for vehicles to stop.

Left - Passing opportunities are extremely scarce on the Angeles Crest Highway because of sight distance limitations. Slower vehicles are advised to use the turnouts to allow other vehicles to pass.

Centre - Superelevated reverse curve on the Angeles Crest Highway (Hwy 2). At the time this photo was taken, Hwy 2 was closed part-way between Cloud Burst Summit and Big Pines, as indicated by the yellow sign at left.

Right - Sign indicating the crest of the mountain pass at Cloud Burst Summit. At 7,018 feet above sea level, this is one of the highest passes in the Los Angeles area.

Left - Facing west towards the rock cut on the Angeles Crest Highway near the Kratka Ridge Tunnels. It is only from this angle that the actual size of the rock cut can be appreciated. The grey inverted triangular area at 3 o'clock is a retaining wall supporting the highway.
