California Highway 134 (Ventura Freeway) Photographs

Left - Overhead sign on the eastbound Ventura Freeway (U.S. Route 101) approaching the Hollywood Freeway Interchange in Studio City. At this interchange, the route of U.S. Route 101 changes direction and follows the Hollywood Freeway south through Cahuenga Pass towards Downtown Los Angeles. The Ventura Freeway continues east towards Glendale and Pasadena, but it is known as Hwy 134 beyond the Hollywood Freeway Interchange.

Centre - Overhead freeway guide signs on the Ventura Freeway at the Hollywood Freeway Interchange. Even though this is an interchange between two of the most important freeways in Los Angeles, it was only built as a partial interchange due to the skewed angle at which these two freeways cross. There is no direct freeway-to-freeway ramp connection between the eastbound Ventura Freeway (southbound U.S. Route 101) and the northbound Hollywood Freeway (Hwy 170) or between the northbound Hollywood Freeway (northbound U.S. Route 101) and the eastbound Ventura Freeway (Hwy 134). There is also no direct ramp between the southbound Hollywood Freeway (Hwy 170) and the westbound Ventura Freeway (northbound U.S. Route 101) or between the westbound Ventura Freeway (Hwy 134) and the southbound Hollywood Freeway (southbound U.S. Route 101).

Right - The partial interchange between the Hollywood and Ventura Freeways is very well signed and is fairly easy for drivers to navigate, despite the rather complicated route number change on both freeways at this interchange. Had this been a full interchange, the ramp signing would have likely been very confusing for drivers.

Left - Overhead freeway guide signs on the Ventura Freeway at the Hollywood Freeway Interchange. The three lanes carrying U.S. Route 101 traffic depart from the Ventura Freeway and join the Hollywood Freeway. The two left lanes continue through the interchange and connect to the eastern leg of the Ventura Freeway (Hwy 134).

Centre - Right in the middle of the Hollywood Freeway Interchange, an off-ramp departs from the eastbound Ventura Freeway to Vineland Avenue. The two lanes from southbound U.S. Route 101 that continue through the interchange join with two additional lanes entering from southbound Hwy 170 (Hollywood Freeway).

Left - Overhead freeway guide signs on the eastbound Ventura Freeway (Hwy 134) approaching the Golden State Freeway (Interstate 5) Interchange in Los Angeles. At this interchange, there is no direct freeway-to-freeway ramp connection from eastbound Hwy 134 to northbound Interstate 5. Traffic wishing to head north on Interstate 5 must exit the freeway at Victory Boulevard and use surface streets to access the Winchester Avenue Cloverleaf on Interstate 5.

Centre - Approaching the Victory Boulevard Overpass on the eastbound Ventura Freeway (Hwy 134) in Los Angeles. Traffic bound for northbound Interstate 5 from eastbound Hwy 134 must use this overpass to access the cloverleaf at Winchester Avenue.

Right - Overhead freeway guide signs on the eastbound Ventura Freeway (Hwy 134) in Glendale. Many signs on the eastern leg of the Ventura Freeway do not make reference to the freeway's name. I suppose that by this point, you are so far east of Ventura that the freeway name is almost irrelevant.

Left - Pedestrian overpass on the Ventura Freeway (Hwy 134) east of Downtown Glendale. Many freeways in Los Angeles were built within established neighborhoods. Pedestrian overpasses such as this one were built to maintain pedestrian access between local surface streets that were severed by the freeway's construction.

Right - Approaching the Glendale Freeway (Hwy 2) Interchange on the Ventura Freeway (Hwy 134). At a length of almost 1 km (0.6 miles), the flyover connecting the eastbound Ventura Freeway to the northbound Glendale Freeway is one of the longest freeway flyovers in the northern part of Los Angeles.

Above - Overhead signs on the eastbound Ventura Freeway (Hwy 134) approaching the Foothill Freeway (Interstate 210) Interchange in Pasadena. The Ventura Freeway ends its 85-mile journey across Los Angeles and Ventura Counties at this interchange. This interchange also marks the eastern terminus of Hwy 134.
