Left - Hwy 120 & Tioga Pass sign at Lee Vining. The Tioga Pass is closed each winter due to excessive snowfall in the mountains. In most years, the mountain pass remains closed until early June. When the Tioga Pass is open, Hwy 120 forms a continuous east-west route between Interstate 5 south of Stockton and U.S. Route 6 near the California-Nevada Boundary.

Left - The Tioga Pass Road was literally built on a narrow ledge notched out of the mountain face. It is an absolutely spectacular route, crossing over the Sierra Nevada from US Route 395 to Yosemite National Park. The Tioga Pass Road is one of California's most scenic highways.

Centre - The Tioga Pass Road is steep and winding. Drivers who are intimidated by narrow mountain roads should stay off this highway. There are often no barriers or guide rails along the highway and it is a very long way down to the bottom of the canyon if you are unfortunate enough to drive off the road.

Left - The gatehouse to Yosemite National Park marks the crest of the Tioga Pass on Hwy 120. There is a $20.00 fee for driving across Tioga Pass to Yosemite Valley, but this fee provides motorists with a day-use pass for Yosemite National Park.

Centre - The Tioga Pass elevation of 9,945 feet above sea level is marked on a sign at the gatehouse. This is the highest mountain pass on a California State Highway.
